Seed Library
The HPL Seed Library is open from late winter to mid-autumn each year. We strive to provide a variety of flowers, herbs, vegetables, fruits, and grains, to support our local ecosystem and the health of our community. The Seed Library is open to anyone, and packets do not need to be checked out.
Each household is asked to limit to 15 packets to ensure that more patrons get a chance to borrow seeds. Our packets contain about 1/3 of a commercial-sized packet each. Our goal isn't to fully stock every local garden, but to help people access a wider range of varieties, and explore a new hobby.
The Seed Library is restocked regularly from the spring through the fall. As planting seasons change, new varieties may be added to our collection. Our seeds are sourced from donations, our own rain garden, Michigan's One Seed, One State program, and supplemented by a few library purchases each year. If there's a seed you'd like to see added, please let us know!
More information on planting and seed-saving can be found in multiple places:
- Our Gardening sections (Non-Fiction 630-635)
- Materials from other libraries in our CoOp in the online catalog
- Books from libraries across the state through MeLCat
- Michigan's One Seed, One State program
HPL thanks everyone who donates to keep the Seed Library full, as well as Lake and Sharon who run it.
