Hastings Public Library

Director's Message

March 14, 2020 Corona Virus Update:
Library CLOSED to the Public

In response to the coronavirus (COVID-19), the Hastings Public Library is taking further steps to protect our staff and the general public, particularly the high-risk populations we serve and the high-risk populations who work and volunteer for the library.

In the interest of mitigating the impact of the virus per CDC guidelines and the recommendation of the Michigan Library Association, the library is closed to public access effective Monday March 16, 2020. All programs, outreach visits and meetings are cancelled.

We are planning to reopen when public schools reopen at the direction of Governor Whitmer. At this point, schools are planning to reopen Monday, April 6 but if they remain closed, we will also remain closed.

We will continue to monitor the situation and will communicate updates through traditional and social media when available. Follow us on Facebook and here on our website.

While we are closed, digital services are still available through Overdrive/Libby, RBDigital and Hoopla.

Additional steps we are taking while we are closed include:
  • Extending due dates on currently checked out items to May 1, 2020.
  • Extending expiration dates on library cards to May 1, 2020 for any expiring before then.
  • Waiving any fines incurred on materials while we are closed.
  • As always, WiFi is available for public access 24/7 outside the building.

Library staff will be in the building from 9:00am – 5:00pm Monday through Friday while we are closed. Feel free to call us with questions at 269-945-4263. Email us at staff@hastingspubliclibrary.org or use the Contact Us form.

We apologize for the inconvenience this causes. Thank you for your understanding.

Sincerely,

Peggy Hemerling
Library Director

RE: Library Programs & Group Meetings and the Coronavirus (COVID-19)

The Hastings Public Library leadership team has continued to monitor the situation around the coronavirus. In support of both state and national efforts to limit the spread of the virus, we have made the decision to cancel all library programs and external group meetings at the library through Sunday April 5th, 2020, effective immediately.

The library remains open at this time on our regular schedule. Patrons may use library services, including computers, normally. Items may still be requested through the online catalog and our electronic options of Overdrive/Libby, RBDigital and Hoopla are always available.

We encourage everyone to continue to follow CDC guidelines for hand washing, to self-quarantine if not feeling well and to not gather in large groups whether at the library or elsewhere.

As the situation continues to evolve, we will post further updates on the library’s status. If you have any questions related to the library and the coronavirus, please do not hesitate to contact us at 269-945-4263. Email us at staff@hastingspubliclibrary.org or use the Contact Us form on the site.

RE: Coronavirus (COVID-19) Preparedness

The Hastings Public Library remains committed to the health and well-being of our community. To that end we are closely watching the status of the coronavirus (COVID-19). While our community and state are yet to be affected, we want to be prepared should that change and are currently taking the following steps:

  • We have always and continue to place hand sanitizer out for patron use. You can find dispensers on the main floor near the children’s self-checkout, the print release station and the information desk.
  • We have always and continue to thoroughly clean all restrooms nightly.
  • We have sanitizing wipes available at both desks on request if you want to wipe down a computer keyboard, mouse or chair.
  • We are wiping down computer keyboards, mice and door handles nightly.
  • We are asking any staff member who does not feel well to stay home and encourage patrons to do the same to minimize potential exposure to any illnesses.

We encourage everyone to follow the CDC guidelines for hand washing and limiting exposure to any illness, including but not limited to the coronavirus.

If you choose to stay home, we have several digital options for anyone remaining at home to still read, watch movies or listen to music. Check out Overdrive/Libby, RBDigital and Hoopla.

As the situation changes and evolves we will act accordingly and keep you, our patrons, updated. If you have any questions related to the library and the coronavirus, please do not hesitate to contact me.
