3D Printing Guidelines

Be sure to review the 3D Printing Policy for all guidelines on printing at HPL. See highlights below.

Note that The Hastings Public Library reserves the right to refuse any 3D print request.

  • The Library's 3D printers and scanners may be used only for lawful purposes. No one will be permitted to use the Library's 3D printer to create material that is:
    • Prohibited by federal or local law.
    • Unsafe, harmful, dangerous, or poses an immediate threat to the well-being of others.
      • This includes, but is not limited to, weapons such as knives, swords, and firearms or firearm components.
    • Obscene or otherwise inappropriate for the Library environment, including but not limited to inclusion of profanity, suggested profanity, or otherwise inappropriate text or imagery.
    • In violation of another's intellectual property rights, including materials that are subject to copyright, patent or trademark protection.
  • Patrons age 10 and older may request 3D objects be printed by the Library.
  • HPL will only print with filaments purchased by the Library.

3D Printing Specifications

Contact the library with questions on printing specs. 

  • File Types Accepted: .STL and .3MF
    • Library staff will not spend time converting or manipulating other file types.
  • Printer Model: BambuLab A-1 with AMS
  • Maximum Model Size: 256mm x 256mm x 256mm
    • We recommend keeping print sizes under the max in any dimension to ensure printability.
  • Nozzle Size: .4mm
  • Plate Type: Textured
    • The Library is not currently using a smooth plate for any prints.
  • Maximum Number of
    • Colors: 4
    • Plates per File: 1
    • Weekly Submissions: 3
  • Maximum Print Time: 5 hours
    • Verify time to print your model via Bambu Studio on HPL public computers or download at home.

3D Printing Costs

HPL charges for all filament used during each print.
Any filament used for supports or purged for color changes still counts toward the total amount used.

Current Cost (as of May 5, 2025): $0.05 per gram of PLA Basic/Matte filament used

Note that specialty filaments may incur a higher cost.
