Reading on the Edge is what the Teens are all about in their book selections for Pizza & Pages. Try some of these great reads and you will see why they made for such great discussions:
1. Unwind by Neal Shusterman — in a society where unwanted teens are salvaged for their body parts, three runaways fight the system that would “unwind” them.
2. The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak – a mesmerizing story told by Death himself.
3. Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins — in the not-too distant future 24 are selected by lottery to take part in games that are part entertainment, part brutal intimidation as they are forced to eliminate their competitors until one alone stands victorious.
4. Nothing but the Truth by Avi – attempting to get transferred to another school, Philip breaks one of the school’s policies, becoming the center of a crisis that captures the nation’s attention and the very concepts of freedom, patriotism and respect.
5. The Downsiders by Neal Shusterman — history and urban legend meet in this fantasy about an alternative society, a friendless girl and a pale-other worldly boy whose lives turn upside down when they experience each others worlds.
6. Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins — a continuation of The Hunger Games, the narrative follows the victors into preparations for the 75th Annual Hunger Games, catapulting them into situations far more deadly than those they experienced in the first book.
7. Frozen Fire by Tim Bowler – an atmospheric British supernatural thriller, set against a backdrop of relentless snow, follows fifteen-year old Dusty as she desperately seeks a spectral and powerful young stranger who seems to promise knowledge of her long lost brother.
